Now, returning to its hometown roots, the label is bringing the series back with an evolved, highly curated vision for the summer.

For Summer 2026, the atmosphere is shifting. Moving away from the rooftops of last year, Speedy Sunsets is plunging into the intimate, speakeasy-style elegance of Torbert Street Social.

Running from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, attendees can expect the signature high-energy networking, dancing, and community building that Speedy Records is known for, elevated by an incredible A-Z lineup of regional and local heavyweights:

I had the opportunity to see and hear Teledalase in action during Delaware Music Network’s Open Mic Jam Session, and the experience confirmed everything her branding suggests. She took the stage accompanied only by a small drum and her 4-year-old daughter, effortlessly merging her personal and artistic worlds in a way that felt natural and deeply intentional.

Keeping time with her drum, she treated attendees to a taste of her music and her culture—not as separate things, but as one cohesive expression. Genre-blending. Marketable. Aesthetically consistent. Korri’s goth-punk-rap mix isn’t for everybody, but her ability to own the moment onstage is exactly what gets artists booked. People remembered her name before she stepped offstage.

Bajsh

Whether you’re spiritual or not, Bajsh knows how to work a crowd. His messaging is positive and his engagement is sharp. He gave promoters a clear glimpse at how faith-forward hip-hop can connect without falling flat.

Old Chingu x Tyler Parker (and friends)

Phil Lee took a rare step from organizer to performer, sharing the mic with Tyler Parker. Their track “Closer” had people singing along — proof of real traction, not just hype. From a brand-building standpoint, moments like this show cohesion: the event matched the music.

Seth Witcher

Full band, polished delivery, and a niche sound (emo-core with pop edges) that feels ready for sync placement or a targeted tour run. His originals — especially Villains Need Saving Too — struck a chord. Seth is the kind of artist who knows what lane he’s in and plays it like a vet.

Palmer also recalled auditioning for the role of Nala in The Lion King at the age of nine. Although she didn’t land the part, the experience only fueled her determination.

Her breakthrough came just a few years later when she starred in Akeelah and the Bee (2006), a role that earned her critical acclaim at just 13 years old. Palmer shared her fondness for the role, noting that it was a project she would reprise if given another opportunity. Her portrayal of Akeelah, a young girl competing in the National Spelling Bee, became a touchstone for young Black audiences, inspiring children and families alike.

Palmer’s early career also included notable roles in films like Jump In! (2007), a Disney Channel Original Movie where she starred alongside Corbin Bleu. Her infectious energy and versatility were showcased in this fun, family-friendly film about competitive jump rope. By the time she landed the lead in Nickelodeon’s True Jackson, VP (2008–2011), Palmer had firmly established herself as a household name, playing a teenage fashion executive in a groundbreaking role for young Black girls on TV.

Navigating Hollywood’s Complexities

Throughout the talk, Palmer spoke frankly about navigating Hollywood as a Black woman. When discussing the challenges of dealing with racism and sexism in the entertainment industry, she referenced the words of novelist Toni Morrison: “The real function of racism is to distract you.”

“I can’t go through my day picking up all your microaggressions and tallying them on a list,” she explained. “Because then I’m not thinking about what I gotta do.”

This resilience, Palmer emphasized, is essential for success in a demanding industry. Over the years, she has proven this with bold choices in her career. Her performance in the 2019 crime drama Hustlers alongside Jennifer Lopez earned her praise for stepping into more adult roles. However, during the event, Palmer expressed that if given the chance, she might pass on this particular role today, signaling her changing priorities.

Palmer’s versatility continued to shine in the hit series Scream Queens (2015–2016), where her portrayal of Zayday Williams highlighted her comedic chops and ability to thrive in genre-bending, satirical horror. Audience Q&A: Keke’s Vision Board

In a reflective moment during the Q&A session, Palmer was asked what would appear on her vision board if she could create one. She shared ambitions for her KeyTV Network, a platform aimed at showcasing talent and developing the next generation of creatives. Palmer expressed her desire to continue producing meaningful content that resonates with diverse audiences. This vision aligns perfectly with her ongoing efforts to uplift and support emerging talents in the entertainment industry.

For two days, Blondie Mansion Week-End reimagined what an arts event could be. Part social mixer, part keynote series, all aimed at helping creatives turn vision into sustainable business.

A Platform with Purpose

Founded by Sara A. Crawford, Blondie Mansion has always blurred the line between culture and entrepreneurship. This Week-End made the mission tangible: give artists and entrepreneurs not only a space to connect, but the tools to grow. It wasn’t about entertainment for its own sake. It was about connecting people and translating creativity into careers.

Day One: Vibe + Visuals

The opening night kept the focus on connection. Sara A. Crawford challenged attendees to introduce themselves and connect with at least 2 others before the night was over. Host Ari Sianeh guided a room filled with emerging artists, small business owners, and community leaders, pushing attendees to go beyond casual networking.

Dr. Traci Currie’s spoken word kept attendees grounded in the purpose and focused on the mission. Smashed Label’s live art added yet another layer of depth to gallery, reminding attendees to take in the various paintings and decor. Everything underscored the message: collaboration is the currency driving creative success stories.

Harvey Road’s set brought the sounds of classic hip-hop, R&B, and soul together under one roof. Their selection as the featured band of the night tells me that Sara A Crawford was serious about the “vibe” of the event.

Day Two: Build + Bloom

I didn’t attend the second day in person, but the programming lineup stood out in conversation with founder Sara A. Crawford. The focus shifted from atmosphere to execution, with sessions designed to close the gap between creativity and business. One keynote that caught my attention was Malcolm Coley’s talk on AI—less “threat to artistry,” more toolkit for scaling content and planning. That kind of framing matters; it recognizes where technology sits in the creative economy instead of dismissing it outright. Other sessions, from Michelle Washington’s breakdown of branding strategy to panels on pricing, sales, and IP protection, all addressed the same core issue: creatives rarely struggle with talent, but too often fall behind on business development.

Why It Mattered

Even without being in the room, it’s clear the intent was to push artists toward building careers with infrastructure, not just inspiration. And Crawford’s track record, over $8 million raised for entrepreneurs, 15,000 creatives served, backs that mission with proof of execution.

The Takeaway

Day Two underscored what Wilmington’s creative economy needs: education, strategy, and sustainable systems. Artists here already operate on the cutting edge of craft. The challenge (and the opportunity) is making sure their business practices keep pace. Blondie Mansion’s programming leaned straight into that gap, offering a model that’s worth replicating well beyond Delaware.’

Production

Despite its 2025 release, The Codices lands with an unapologetically blast from hip-hop’s golden age. Zeeky El and producer Joey JuggaKnotts meticulously crafted an authentic boom-bap experience, complete with gritty textures and dusty tape samples.

Fans of seminal albums like GZA’s Liquid Swords will feel right at home with Zeeky El’s fresh take on a timeless sound, delivered as an instant modern classic.

Track 2: They Don’t Know, with B-Wellz

“They Don’t Know” fully embraces Zeeky’s militant, old-school hip-hop aesthetic. Featuring B-Wellz, the track’s standout chorus cements its status as an instant boom-box anthem, perfect for repeat rotations.

Track 5: Nobody Move

Originally released as a single in 2024, “Nobody Move” still hits hard. The track signals its more lighthearted vibe with a Black Dynamite sample, dropping into a beat that fuses blaxploitation swagger with the tension of classic spy film soundtracks. It’s a playful yet sharp cut that offers a vivid glimpse into Zeeky’s real-life personality.

Track 9: Fly Propaganda

“Fly Propaganda” opens with a chilling sample, pulled from what sounds like a nightly news broadcast on foreign espionage masked as national security. One line in particular distills Zeeky El’s ethos:

Unwrap the bandages, assess the wound, reveal untapped advantages.

Here, Zeeky reframes the narrative: the most marginalized communities aren’t broken, they’re underestimated. He positions “Fly Propaganda” as a call to rebrand power and reclaim identity, turning wounds into weapons.

Track 15: Strange’r the Times, with Ancient Alienz & King Osiris (Taino Knight)

Track 15, “Stange’r the Times” marks the return of old school hip-hop tag-teams. The chemistry here is undeniable, and the track feels like a cipher straight from the golden era. Joey JuggaKnotts’ production is on full display here too. His work on the classic MPC groove box delivers a warm, punchy soundscape that feels hand-crafted for this moment. The swing in the drums make this my favorite beat on The Codices.

Counterintelligence for the Culture

Zeeky El’s The Codices serves as an incisive antidote to cultural complacency. Rather than drowning listeners in cynicism, the album cleverly weaponizes knowledge, identity, and history as positive propaganda – reclaiming narratives often hijacked by destructive forces.

In this ambitious debut, Zeeky transforms his cultural literacy into actionable art, urging listeners to shake off apathy and actively participate in rewriting their collective futures. If dystopia is where ignorance thrives, then The Codices is a battle cry for awareness, a wake-up call, and a compelling reminder that music still has the power to reshape reality.

• Applied a magenta tint (+118) and reduced green saturation dramatically to neutralize the venue’s lighting.

Stylistic Touches

• Faded the deepest blacks slightly with tone curves for a softer contrast.

• Boosted vibrance (+20) to keep the blue jersey and skin tones natural yet punchy.

• Fine-tuned the red and blue channels in the color mixer to let JWADI’s jersey pop.

Over the past 18 months, I’ve held a seat on the board of our local non-profit music community, Delaware Music Network. As treasurer, I’ve been responsible for overseeing the finances and corporate compliance of the organization. Beyond managing back-office affairs, I’ve spent much of my time photographing the featured artists at our monthly Open Mic Jam Sessions.

On the first Wednesday of every month, I packed my gear and headed to Wilmington Public Library to document local musicians sharing their latest work with a public audience. These evenings became a window into the heart of Delaware’s music scene. Here are five lessons I learned on the ground at one of the state’s most prolific community-driven events.

Documenting local musicians creates cultural memory

The photographs I’ve made over the past year and a half have traveled farther than I could have imagined. Each month, the featured artists receive professional images from their performances at no cost to them. They’ve gone on to use these photos everywhere. Social media profiles, event flyers, press kits, even investor pitch decks that were used to secure funding for larger projects.

Since starting this journey, I’ve watched my work circulate through the community and embed itself in high-visibility spaces. Posts featuring my open mic photographs have reached over 100,000 people on Instagram. Flyers with my images have helped sell hundreds of tickets to local events. What began as a small personal project has become a vital part of Wilmington’s creative ecosystem.

This experience taught me a big lesson about the true value of my work as a photographer.

Early investments in branding pay off big time.

Everyone has a personal brand, whether they realize it or not. Those who understand that truth tend to build momentum in their communities faster.

At these sessions, I saw firsthand how branding translates to audience connection. Artists with cohesive online identities, consistent visuals, and clear messaging won over fans and followers more readily than those who didn’t.

Being easy to find and recognize has become its own kind of currency.

Community spaces create unexpected collaborations.

Open mics are networking powerhouses. You never know who will be in the room. Sure, there are familiar faces you can count on seeing each month, but the other 80 seats are wild cards.

I met people working in design, web development, marketing, and even civil service at these events. One chance connection at the library led me to their marketing team and the opportunity to photograph Keke Palmer’s sold-out book talk. That’s right, our local library was quietly hosting A-list talent. It makes you wonder what’s brewing at your own community spaces.

Don’t underestimate the potential hidden in your community. You never know who you’ll meet or what opportunities they might offer.

The same faces often evolve dramatically over 18 months.

Open mics are incubators for raw, unfiltered talent. Regular performers often grow at breakneck speed.

I’ve watched audience members shift from skeptical critics to devoted fans. These spaces give artists room to develop their sound, engage with budding fan bases, and sharpen their skills in real time. Those who showed up consistently with new material charted their 10,000-hour journeys toward mastery before my lens.

As with all things, consistency remains a key factor in growth, development, and ultimate success.

Grassroots scenes thrive when they’re visible

Visibility is oxygen for local functions. Organizers don’t always have the time or resources to showcase their work, but documentation validates their efforts. It attracts new talent, lends credibility with outsiders, and helps the scene punch above its weight. The images I’ve created have helped dozens of artists position themselves for opportunities beyond Delaware.

Every local scene needs its historians, its storytellers, its champions. Whether you’re an artist, a photographer, or just someone who loves the music, find your role and lean in. What feels small now might turn out to be the first chapter of a much larger story.

Now in its third year, Reggae in the Park has grown from a niche cultural celebration into one of the region’s most anticipated summer staples. Thousands came out repping flags from across the West Indies, filling the lawn with the kind of energy only Caribbean music can unlock. The lineup all day leaned into the genre’s full spectrum. Roots reggae, bashment-era dancehall, a little soca, even hip-hop. But it was clear the crowd was pacing for one name.

Mr. Vegas didn’t waste time. As soon as he hit the stage, it was go mode. His catalog stretches back to the late 90s, and he came to remind you, grooves like “Hot Wuk” hit like it always has. Big, rowdy, and impossible to stand still through. With Vegas’ charisma on full display, the set felt less like a nostalgia trip and more like a cultural reset.

He played to the crowd like a veteran, switching effortlessly between party anthems and sing-alongs. One standout moment had him pausing the beat to deliver an impromptu reggae rendition of Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud.” It caught everyone by surprise but landed perfectly. Phones went up, voices rose, and for a few minutes the park was one giant choir.

Midway through, he took it back to basics. “90s dancehall? That was the golden era,” he told the crowd before running through snippets of classics. He even pulled in a group chorus of Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” to seal the vibe. Flags waved harder. People who hadn’t danced all day found their footing. The cultural connection felt real and personal.

As the sun set behind the casino and the drums rested, it was clear Reggae in the Park had landed another successful year. Mr. Vegas didn’t just headline the festival. He blessed it.

What made the performance hit was more than just the hits. It was the way Mr. Vegas tuned into the moment. He knew where he was, knew who was in front of him, and made sure no matter your flag or background, you felt part of the set.

Sunday Soul Brunch

Wilmington’s new Sunday Soul Brunch series is bringing live music, real food, and an atmosphere that felt curated from top to bottom. Presented by the Delaware Music Network and BKS Entertainment, with featured headliner TANKSLEY, with opening sounds by local vocalist and creative force Aziza Nailah.

The Soul: Tanksley & Aziza

Aziza Nailah warmed up the room with a lush, soulful set that eased the crowd into the afternoon. Local listeners know her from appearances at venues like The Queen, and the city’s Summer in the Parks series. She delivered a soundscape that was rooted, steady, and grown. Her powerful blend of smooth soul and rich melodic choices gave the brunch crowd something to feel, not just hear.

Tanksley took it from there and did not miss. He started his relationship with brunch goers with a choice selection of his original music. He delivered a performance that moved confidently across soul, funk, gospel, and alternative R&B, all with his signature falsetto vocals. He kept control without ever feeling rigid. It was a set that made you stop mid-bite.

The Opulent

The Opulent provided the ideal backdrop. The room was dressed with intention: jewel tones, gold finishes, floral walls, and ambient lighting that felt more cocktail hour than breakfast rush. Every corner of the venue showed care. It’s the type of place where you really notice the details.

The menu mirrored the mood. Brunch was served in waves, with dishes crossing culinary lanes. I sampled both ends of the spectrum, BBQ wings on one plate with noodles on the next, and found no weak link. Drinks flowed, plates returned empty, and the energy stayed steady from start to close.

What’s Next?

What Delaware Music Network and BKS Entertainment are building here is a rhythm. Sunday Soul Brunch feels like something designed to last, an anchor for the city’s music and creative community that shows up monthly, consistently, and with taste.

Rain usually kills a vibe. Not this time.

Speedy Sunsets, the rooftop launch party for Wilmington’s new dance label Speedy Records, didn’t just survive bad weather—it turned it into a moment. Despite the downpour, the crowd stayed locked in, the dance floor was active, and the DJs kept it pushing. That alone should tell you something about what’s being built here.

Speedy Records is DJ Joey G’s brainchild. After 12 years behind the decks and too many nights playing the same circuit, he wanted more than to be another “local DJ.” Speedy Sunsets was his reset button – proof that Delaware can support a curated, artist-run event series with real legs and a focused sound.

The format was clean: elevated rooftop, ticketed entry, strong bar program with light bites, and a lineup that stayed tight to the mission. This wasn’t about who could bring a crowd — it was about DJs with a distinct sonic point of view. The sound leaned electronic with pop sensibilities — danceable, digestible, but far from basic. Rah V was a standout, cutting through his set with live saxophone solos that turned heads and held attention. That’s the kind of intentional programming that sets a label apart early.

People danced through the rain like it was a scene in a music video. That’s not romanticism—it’s a testament to what Joey and his team pulled off. You don’t get that kind of buy-in without building trust with the audience. And that kind of brand trust? It takes most crews years to earn.

What’s clear now: Speedy Records isn’t waiting for permission to exist. It’s building its own lane. Joey G and Gray $ both have upcoming releases on the docket, and this rooftop wasn’t just a vibe — it’s the first piece of their rollout strategy. Visibility, credibility, and community-building all in one. Wilmington hasn’t had a dance-forward label with real infrastructure behind it in recent memory. Now it does.

Speedy Sunsets wasn’t just a rainy night on a roof. It was a signal. The team behind Speedy Records knows what they’re doing and they’re just getting started.

Over 80 artists and vendors filled the Baltimore War Memorial, transforming it into a fully functional artist market — part performance space, part networking hub, and all energy.

For artists in growth mode — especially those looking to increase their regional footprint — this kind of event checks every box:

• Real stage, real production

• Built-in media coverage

• Direct-to-fan access

• Room to build with other artists, managers, and creators

Wide Awake delivered on all of that.

Production That Backed the Vision

The venue itself played a major role. The Baltimore War Memorial brought weight and presence to the entire experience. A two-screen setup gave full coverage of the performances, and the lighting and audio quality were dialed in — no second-rate treatment here. The media pit was moving nonstop, and content creators had the space and conditions they needed to get clean footage.

It’s clear that Phil and the team weren’t just organizing a show. They were building infrastructure.

That framing isn’t just poetic — it’s practical. Artists came here to be seen, yes, but also to work: to sell merch, build audience rapport, and walk away with content that adds real value to their brand.

Standout Performances (from March 22)

Korri Darkheart

Genre-blending. Marketable. Aesthetically consistent. Korri’s goth-punk-rap mix isn’t for everybody, but her ability to own the moment onstage is exactly what gets artists booked. People remembered her name before she stepped offstage.

Bajsh

Whether you’re spiritual or not, Bajsh knows how to work a crowd. His messaging is positive and his engagement is sharp. He gave promoters a clear glimpse at how faith-forward hip-hop can connect without falling flat.

Old Chingu x Tyler Parker (and friends)

Phil Lee took a rare step from organizer to performer, sharing the mic with Tyler Parker. Their track “Closer” had people singing along — proof of real traction, not just hype. From a brand-building standpoint, moments like this show cohesion: the event matched the music.

Seth Witcher

Full band, polished delivery, and a niche sound (emo-core with pop edges) that feels ready for sync placement or a targeted tour run. His originals — especially Villains Need Saving Too — struck a chord. Seth is the kind of artist who knows what lane he’s in and plays it like a vet.

Final Word

Wide Awake didn’t just “put on a show.” It built a pipeline. This is the kind of event where relationships form, content gets captured, and future plays get made.

On Saturday, March 8th, Ben Arsenal took over The AVE Live in Philly with the first entry in Season 4 of Departed. “Departed” is a concept that blends music, community, and performance art to create immersive experiences. Departed aims to unite and energize communities on dance floors in Philadelphia and beyond. S4E1 featured performances by Eran Hersh, Ben Arsenal, and their collaborators Sky Society, DJ Jholi, and Vorteck, with live sound support from Katerina Sky and Fawziyya Heart. Special thanks to Katerina Sky for making this recap possible.

From the moment I stepped inside, it was clear this wasn’t just another dance party. It was a carefully curated experience where music, art, and entertainment seamlessly intertwined. When I arrived, Sky Society was vibing with the crowd to a remix of Dennis Ferrer’s 2009 classic “Hey Hey.” It was immediately apparent that Departed was bringing the essence of the Ibiza dance scene to Philadelphia.

Departed breaks away from the conventional DJ setup by positioning the DJ in the center of the action on the dance floor. If you haven’t been to an underground electronic show before, this setup fosters a real connection between musicians and their audience. With the stage liberated, dancers and performers had free reign, livening the experience with mesmerizing acts. Attendees were treated to exotic dance performances from the dancers of Aurora Entertainment, and Onyx Ondyx—who, in an unforgettable moment, performed dressed as a giant dancing eyeball. Beyond the stage, the venue was alive with creative energy, featuring live art, games, and an array of artists adding their unique touch to the atmosphere.

Ben Arsenal and his team have cultivated a space where there’s something to see and experience in every direction. The environment was welcoming and inclusive, embracing everyone who stepped through the doors. By the time Ben and Katerina Sky took over the booth at midnight, I was completely immersed in the best elements of dance music culture, production, and artistry.

Ben and Kat kept the energy high with a set filled with infectious top-line melodies from Katerina Sky. At 1 AM, Eran Hersh took over, closing out the night with his signature blend of Afro and Tribal house, bringing a taste of the Miami dance scene to Philly.

A standout moment of the night was when Ben dropped his new remix of “FE!N” by Travis Scott with Edan Rivers. As a fan of UTOPIA, one of my favorite releases of 2023, it was exhilarating to hear the track reimagined in this setting. This remix is a certified heater, destined to find its way into DJ crates and playlists across the scene.
